Racing around Northampton: the heart of British motorsport
With three world-class racing circuits within easy reach, anyone seeking the thunder of engines and the thrill of the race should look no further than the historic city of Northampton. Watch that chequered flag come down on classic cars and discover unique events in the heart of British motorsport with this guide to Northampton’s tracks.
Silverstone: pace, power and prestige
The very mention of the name Silverstone conjures up heroic images. From legendary figures like Jackie Stewart and Ayrton Senna topping the podium, to the euphoric crowds invading the track after Nigel Mansell’s stunning victory in the 1987 British Grand Prix, everyone has their favourite Silverstone memory. Since hosting its first Grand Prix in 1948, this disused airfield has become an international circuit of the highest pedigree. The striking modern architecture of the Silverstone Wing has helped cement its status as a truly iconic venue.
While the glamour of the flagship Formula One weekend has become synonymous with Silverstone, there are other great events hosted at this prestigious track too, like Formula 1 Rolex British Grand Prix in July, and the spectacle of the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival, Silverstone Classic, held in July. Silverstone is just 30 minutes from our Park Inn by Radisson Northampton Town Centre by car, and regular coach and bus services to the circuit mean that getting to events is a smooth ride.
Santa Pod Raceway: no corners, no limits
Ever since its conversion in 1966 from US air base to drag strip, Santa Pod Raceway has hosted the fastest, loudest races in Europe. For those who haven’t experienced drag racing, prepare for a quarter-mile of straight road combined with unadulterated power and velocity. With speeds at Santa Pod reaching an eye-watering 300 mph, visitors in search of an adrenaline rush won’t be disappointed.
The FIA/FIM European Championship, which runs in May is Santa Pod’s showpiece event, with free paddock access getting you to within touching distance of the monstrous vehicles. Alternatively, the Jet Cars and Monster Trucks on display during April’s Festival of Power are the ultimate entertainment for kids, big or small. Just 30 minutes’ drive from Northampton, Santa Pod’s varied events calendar caters for all levels of car obsession.
After a full day of thrill, you definitely need a comfortable and convenient spot to rest, and we have just the place! Stay close to all the high speed action by booking your stay at the Park Inn by Radisson Northampton Town Centre and never miss a race!
