Innsider’s Guide to Cape Town

South Africa’s oldest city and affectionately nicknamed the “Mother City”, Cape Town is surrounded by ocean on three sides with the iconic flat-topped Table Mountain soaring high above its city streets. With powder-white beaches, historic vineyards and a national park all within its borders, this scenic metropolis truly holds its own among the most beautiful cities in the world. Read on to discover our top #Innsider picks.

Bathe at the seat of Table Mountain

Just a 7 minute drive from the centre of Cape Town is the affluent area of Camps Bay. Set against the backdrop of Table Mountain and the Twelve Apostles mountain range, the palm trees lining the streets and yachts bobbing on the water lend it a certain laid-back, Riviera style. The area offers an array of beach-lined bars and restaurants, with the luxury houses of Cape Town’s wealthiest residents nestled behind them.

The trendy vibe is best soaked up from a towel on the long stretch of white sand at Camps Bay Beach. #Innsiders know to keep an eye out for dolphins playing in the water between June and November.

Stroll through the southern ‘burbs

For a change of tempo from the bustling city, journey south to experience the relaxed, boho-chic suburbs of Muizenberg, Kalk Bay and Simon’s Town. The route through Chapman’s Peak Drive, a coastal road that was literally hacked out of the face of the mountain, is the best place to get a feel for the awesome landscape. For a chilled morning, check out the vibrant seaside town of Kalk Bay, with its trendy boutiques and antiques shops, before heading further south to Simon’s Town and Boulders Beach to grab some beach time with the wild penguins that inhabit the area. From there you can while away an afternoon in the sun after seeking out of the many sandy spots among the boulders on the edge of the crystal-clear water.

Table Mountain Danie, Cape Town

For the sophisticated sippers

Located at the centre of the Cape Peninsula and only 20 minutes from the centre of town, the Constantia Valley is the oldest wine-growing area in Southern Africa and makes for a perfect rural retreat. Klein Constantia is one of the better wineries, set amid the trees and lush greenery on the upper foothills of Constantiaberg, with awesome views across the valley and to False Bay.

The tasting room is open all year round for those wanting to sample the world-class wines. #Innsiders make sure to sample the Sauvingnon Blanc and the sweet Vin de Constance.
