From the desert to the sea in Dammam
Whether you’re visiting Dammam for business or a relaxing break, there are plenty of ways to enjoy its unique desert and ocean landscapes.
White sandy beaches and golden desert dunes characterize the capital of Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province. A place of contrast, and a popular destination with tourists from across the Kingdom, Dammam has a wealth of activities to keep visitors entertained. One of the oldest occupied areas in the Middle East, travelers have been enjoying the delights of Dammam for several centuries.
Dive off Half Moon Bay
The city’s most popular beach is named for its semi-circular shape and known for its pristine white sands and clear waters. The beach was man-made, as was the reef just off its shoreline. The artificial reef is made from old vehicles, and although coral hasn’t quite taken to it just yet, the submerged cars and trucks make a fantastic habitat for a wide array of sea creatures. Diving groups head down to the reef every Friday, so don your wetsuit and join them for an exploration of this unusual underwater scene.
Go fishing on Al Marjan Island
Translating as ‘Coral Island’, this quiet idyll is attached to the mainland by a causeway. However, the most scenic way to reach it is by boat, which takes around 15 minutes. The island has beautiful beaches and is a famous fishing spot. Locals tend to go at sunrise or sunset to snag the best fish. Once you’ve landed your catch, you can enjoy it fresh from the sea, while relaxing on the island’s surprisingly lush meadows. It’s a popular barbecue spot, so don’t be surprised if the scent of sizzling dinners whets your appetite long before you’ve hauled in your own catch.
BBQ in the desert
Desert safaris, in which you get the opportunity to race around in a 4×4 churning up the sands, are a great way to see a different side to Dammam. Alahsa Safari offer a package deal which includes blasting through sand dunes, shooting air rifles, and a heritage Saudi activity, complete with a henna tattoo for the girls in the group. The day ends with a barbecue at a local farm, or in a desert camp. The trip takes you about 150km south of the city, making this the ideal way to escape the hustle and bustle.
Stroll along Dammam Corniche
Damman’s Corniche is located just a short distance away from our Park Inn by Radisson Dammam, nestled on the other side of a narrow land spit. The waterfront promenade is a fantastic place to put your thoughts together while looking out over the Gulf. Sculptures by local artists line the path, with manicured lawns on either side inviting you to sit down and enjoy a spectacular sunset. This is where you can catch small cruise ships for a short jaunt to Al-Marjan Island, or simply around it and back again. Carnival rides offer entertainment for children, but for adults, the fantastic sea-views and relaxing atmosphere are more than enough to make this one of Dammam’s highlights.
Regardless of whether you prefer the colorful seaside or sandy deserts there are plenty activities that will let you see Dammam and the surrounding areas from another perspective. Try new sports such as driving a 4×4 through sand dunes or diving reefs and experience the incredible nature that surrounds you as you enjoy an unforgettable holiday in Saudi Arabia.
