BMW Museum and BMW Welt, Munich

BMW is known around the world for its pioneering automobile inventions and excellent driving experience. Car enthusiasts visiting Munich should make sure they head to the amazing BMW museums in this picturesque German city.

Sheer Driving Pleasure

Your first point of call should be the fascinating BMW Museum, which shows exhibits from the near 100 year history of BMW. This Munich museum opened in 1973, and underwent a sleek redesign and expansion in 2008.

In the BMW Museum you will be able to see about 125 of the most important and attractive cars, motorcycles and engines in the BMW collection. You’ll also learn more about the company, brand BMW, and the products.

Highlights include the House of Motor Sport, an exhibition of distinctive two-seater roadsters, the hydrogen-powered H2R record vehicle, and a famous Art Car. Information on the displays is in both English and German.

Throughout the summer of 2014 the BMW Museum has a temporary exhibition on the legendary Rolls-Royce automobiles. As well as gleaming Rolls-Royce models, discover the history of the brand from 1904, rare archive items and art and design objects.

A World of Wonder

In 2007 the landmark BMW Welt (world) building opened opposite the BMW Museum.

The Gallery of Driving Pleasure in BMW Welt showcases the engines, technologies, design process and current models of BMW. Look out for core BMW mobiles like the luxury sedan BMW 7, the Z4 Roadster and BMW 4 Series Convertible.

At BMW Welt there are also exhibitions on the cheeky Mini, elegant Rolls-Royce, new BMW motorcycles, and the company itself.

Make A Day Of It

Try a tour of the BMW Museum or BMW Welt to make the most of your visit. There’s a special Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Exhibition tour every day at 4.15pm in the BMW museum.

You could take a combined tour of BMW Museum, the most interesting sections of the nearby BMW Plant and highlights of BMW Welt. To see all the BMW buildings visit from Tuesday to Friday, when all three are open.

Both the BMW museum and BMW Welt have excellent restaurants, so you don’t need to rush away from the gorgeous cars for food.

If you’re in the mood for something light, head to the elegant Bavarie in BMW Welt which serves salad, sushi and light meals. Try the Biker’s Lodge for a ‘Bavarian Bento Box’ or Coopers for a filling lunch and coffee.

Both Munich museums have shops on site, selling clothes, books, accessories, postcards and gifts to buy after you’ve enjoyed your visit to the home of cars.
