There’s more to Zurich than banking and chocolate. This fast-paced finance hub is a surprisingly cool destination for unwinding on a weekend break – just check out the city’s thriving lido scene. If you’re looking to test the waters of Switzerland’s hippest outdoor swimming, read on for our favorite spots to take the plunge.

Zurich’s lidos – or badis, as the locals would say - are scattered along the Limmat and around the lakefront. The coolest spots, where the city’s young and beautiful top up their tans while hipsters sip cocktails, are found in the former red light district at Langstrasse. Whether you’re a serious swimmer or a trendsetter looking to make a splash, there’s a lido for you in Switzerland’s largest city.

Best for a swim: Seebad Enge

This popular pool on the southern side of Lake Zurich is a hotspot for swimmers and athletic types. Swim laps in the specially marked swimming lanes, or dive off one of the boards perched over the lake if you dare. This badi boasts mixed and women-only areas, and both have access to fresh water pools as well as direct access to the lake. The fantastic alpine views make a picturesque backdrop for al fresco yoga classes – a great way to stretch out after your swim. Seebad Enge is open late year round (it’s a sauna in winter), so stay for a beer and take in the city lights after dark.

Best for families: Strandbad Tiefenbrunnen

If you’re traveling with kids, you’ll want to spend an afternoon at Zurich’s largest lido. With its fun adventure playground and a shallow non-swimmers’ pool, Strandbad Tiefenbrunnen is refreshingly child-friendly. Parents can soak up the sun on the poolside lawn, and the whole family can enjoy offerings like table tennis and volleyball. If you’re planning to spend a full day at the lido – the water slides might keep the kids occupied for a while – bring some supplies to take advantage of the on-site barbecue facilities.

Best for night owls: Flussbad Schanzengraben

By day, this riverside lido near Zurich’s Old Botanical Garden is only open to men. At night, it transforms into the renowned Rimini Bar, where anyone can lounge on the exotic floor cushions, sipping cocktails by the pool and sampling delicacies from the grill. This is a serious hotspot with mood lighting and devoted local crowds of young creatives. It’s only a fifteen minute walk from the main station, so it’s an easy journey home to our Park Inn by Radisson Zürich Airport Hotel.

Best for a girls’ weekend: Frauenbad Stadthausquai

This charming women-only lido offers views of the Grossmünster church with its two iconic towers. The small, seasonal art deco style badi offers refreshments and massage services, so it’s the ideal place to relax during a weekend getaway – especially if you’ve been out on the town!
