Living it Large in Leuven

A historic and picturesque city, Leuven is the capital of the Flemish Brabant region and just 25km from Brussels. With its beautiful architecture and lively bar culture, there is plenty of fun to be found for those fancying a trip to one of Belgium’s tourist hotspots. To help you discover the best Leuven has to offer, our #innsider team has left no stone unturned to uncover some of the best hidden gems available:

Beer beckons

Take advantage of Leuven’s well-earned ‘beer capital of the world’ tag by sampling some of its trendy bars. Recently opened, The Capital is the perfect stop to taste the region’s best brews, along with beers from all over the world. The self-proclaimed ‘biggest bar in the world’ has its entire stock visible through a glass ceiling, creating a visual spectacle for visitors. Having only recently opened its doors, The Capital is yet to be discovered by many a tourist, so take advantage now before the hordes descend!

If you are looking for a great atmosphere, then look no further than De Oude Markt. Located within the centre of the city, the large square boasts a massive 40 bars one after the other! In the summer months, the bars come together and form one large terrace, mingle with the students and locals all night long. We also have it on good authority that during the academic year (Sept – Dec and Feb – May), Wednesday and Thursday evenings are peak time for crowds, as the city’s large student population descend upon the bars. The square is known for its lively, but friendly environment and provides one of the most exciting drinking experiences in Europe.

Hipster happenings

If you prefer something a little less raucous, or need to give your head a much-needed break after the night before, some of Leuven’s hipster stores are well worth discovering to pick up something a little different. Mechelsestraat and Vismarkt’s intimate and narrow streets are inviting and offer a range of culinary and independent stores for you to explore. Many noted Belgian chocolatiers are hidden away down these side streets, so ensure you make a visit to give your sweet tooth a treat.

Whilst enjoying the fantastic architecture and beer festivities is a must, there is something for the kids which will give them an experience they will never forget. Fun Oase is the ultimate gaming and play zone for children, offering assault courses, slides, ball pools and firm family favourites such as air hockey, go karting and gaming zones with PlayStation and Xbox. Fun Oase tell us that many an adult has tried to roll back the years and take advantage of all that’s on offer!
